It would be great if we can add and discuss photos of South African nurses and nursing on this site. Here are a few topics to consider:
  • The history of public and private nursing schools (e.g. Baragwanath hospital)
    • The nurses and their old uniforms
      • The history of black, colored and Indian nurses in South Africa (I started with photos I have and places I have been, but I would love contributions that makes the site truly representative of all South African nurses)

Photos with a historical content was created by Joan
The past few weeks we have been busy collecting and preparing photos related to the history of nursing for the gallery. It is not yet finalized (it is a surprisingly time consuming task!) - we have uploaded most of the photos, but we need to still add a detailed description to each. So while we are "describing" feverishly, I must thank three contributors in particular:

The old black and white photos of Henrietta Stockdale was graciously shared with us by the McGregor museum in Kimberley. Thank you Robert from the photography section. I spent a memorable afternoon viewing the photographs in December 2014.

The Henrietta Stockdale letter of reference (and other letters) is also from the McGregor Museum, Kimberley. If you ever want to meet an enthusiastic archivist who is willing to accommodate a novice researcher, you can't go wrong - contact Vida at the museum.

Finally, thank you to Mrs Lilian Hayes who sent us photos of her mother, professor Charlotte Searle. At the moment those photos are not yet evident in the gallery - we are in the final stages of preparation to upload them. They are such unique photos that we really want to get it right.
